How much RAM does a laptop need? 8, 16 or 32 GB
16 GB for most people. Windows 11, Microsoft 365 and Teams each ask for 4 GB, but you run them at the same time, and Zoom and Photoshop recommend 16 GB. Buy 32 GB for virtual machines or 4K video. The cheapest refurbished laptop with enough RAM for most people sells from €132 (16 GB), seen 16 September 2026.
The answer per use
Each figure below comes from the maker of the software. A minimum is what the software needs to run. It does not include the other programs you keep open.
Browsing and office work: 8 to 16 GB
Windows 11 itself needs "4 gigabytes (GB) or greater." Microsoft 365, the Office apps, lists "4 GB RAM; 2 GB RAM (32-bit)" for Windows. Each figure is for one program alone, but Windows, a browser and Word all hold memory at the same time. 8 GB is twice each minimum. 16 GB gives you room for many browser tabs next to your documents.
Study: 16 GB
A student runs the same office apps, plus video lectures and calls. Our guide to the best refurbished laptops for students quotes two universities. Plymouth recommends 16 GB, and York says most courses see no benefit above 16 GB. That guide also prices six light laptops with 16 GB.
Business with many tabs and video calls: 16 GB
On Windows and on a Mac, the Teams app asks for "4.0 GB RAM." Zoom asks for more. In its table "Processor, RAM, and CPU bit requirements", Zoom lists 4 GB as the minimum and 16 GB as the recommended RAM. On a work day, you run Teams or Zoom, Outlook, a browser with many tabs and a spreadsheet at once. Buy 16 GB, the size Zoom recommends.
Programming with containers or virtual machines: 16 to 32 GB
Docker Desktop on Windows needs "8GB system RAM". That is the RAM of the whole laptop, so 8 GB leaves nothing spare for your editor and browser. A virtual machine takes its own share: Microsoft sets a Windows 11 virtual machine at "Memory: 4 GB or greater." The laptop cannot use that memory while the virtual machine runs. So 16 GB is the start for a developer, and 32 GB is the size for several containers or virtual machines at once. Our guide to the best refurbished laptop for programming compares 16 and 32 GB for Docker, Android Studio and Visual Studio, and names four laptops with two RAM slots.
Photo and video editing: 16 GB, or 32 GB for 4K
Adobe gives Photoshop a minimum of 8 GB and recommends "16 GB or more". For Premiere Pro, Adobe recommends "16 GB RAM for HD media" and "32 GB or more for 4K and higher". So 16 GB suits photo editing and HD video. Buy 32 GB if you edit 4K video.
Soldered or upgradable RAM
On a used laptop, the RAM you can add later matters as much as the RAM it ships with. Some laptops have slots, so you can add or replace a module. Others have the RAM soldered to the board, and you can never change that amount.
Two ThinkPads show the difference. For the T480, Lenovo's specification sheet states "32GB max / 2400MHz DDR4, dual-channel capable, two DDR4 SO-DIMM sockets". You can buy a ThinkPad T480 with 8 GB and add a module later. Its successor, the ThinkPad T490, has "One memory soldered to systemboard, one DDR4 SO-DIMM slot, dual-channel capable". Part of its RAM is fixed, and you can change only the one slot.
If you buy less RAM today to save money, buy a laptop you can upgrade. Our list of laptops with upgradable RAM holds only models where our research found the RAM is not soldered.
Why RAM costs more now
Memory prices rose sharply, because the makers of memory chips moved their newest production lines to high-bandwidth memory for AI accelerators and to large server modules. A new laptop carries today's memory price. A refurbished laptop carries the price of the year it was made. Our why refurbished page shows the price series with its sources.
What each size costs refurbished today
This site ranks every offer by its price per GB of RAM, so you can compare a 16 GB laptop with a 32 GB one fairly. In your Market, refurbished offers cost a median €29.78 per GB of RAM, seen 10 October 2026. Multiply that by the size you need for a rough price.
- 16 GB. The price at the top of this page is the cheapest laptop with the size most people need. The 16 GB table lists every offer from the cheapest up.
- 32 GB. Far fewer offers have 32 GB. On the day we wrote this, the cheapest one cost about twice the cheapest 16 GB laptop in every Market we checked. The 32 GB table shows today's prices.
- 8 GB. An 8 GB laptop costs less, but it gives you the least room. If you buy one, pick a laptop with a free slot so you can add RAM later.
