Best refurbished laptops for students: what 16 GB costs today

A student needs 16 GB of RAM, a Windows 11 processor, a light case, a good battery and a warranty. Many refurbished business laptops give all five. The cheapest refurbished laptop on this site sells from US$142 (16 GB), seen 16 September 2026. That is the floor. A light ThinkPad, Latitude or EliteBook that meets every point can cost more. The table below prices each one live.

What a student laptop needs

University IT departments publish the laptop they expect a student to bring. Their lists and the makers' own specifications give five points. Every price on this page is for the 16 GB laptops this site tracks, because 16 GB is the first point.

  1. 16 GB of RAM. The University of Plymouth recommends "16GB of RAM" for students who run a variety of software. The University of York sets a lower floor of "8GB RAM", and also sets the ceiling: "For non-specialist courses you will see no benefit from a higher specification than an i5 processor/16GB RAM/500GB SSD." So 16 GB is enough for most courses, and more is money you do not need to spend.
  2. A processor that runs Windows 11. York asks for a "Windows 11 operating system", and Plymouth lists Windows 11 too. Windows 11 needs a processor on Microsoft's list. For Intel, the oldest generation on that list is the 8th: it names "8th Generation Core i5 Processors". For AMD, Microsoft lists each chip by name, for example the "Ryzen™ 5 PRO" 4650U on its list of supported AMD processors. Read the processor name before you buy. An i5-8350U is 8th generation. An i5-7300U or an i5-6300U is older, and it is not on the list.
  3. Low weight. A student carries the laptop every day. York says: "If you intend to carry your laptop around campus, we suggest a weight of less than 1.5kg." Many small business laptops meet this. Lenovo gives the lightest ThinkPad T14s Gen 1 as "1.27 kg (2.81 lbs)", the lightest ThinkPad T490 as "1.46 kg (3.22 lbs)", and the lightest ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 as "1.49 kg (3.28 lbs)". Not every model meets it: Dell gives the Latitude 5490 as "Start from 3.52 lb / 1.60 kg".
  4. A battery for the whole day. A new battery lasts a long time in a small business laptop. Lenovo rates the T14 Gen 1 at "MobileMark 2018: 11.45 hr", a benchmark result on a new machine. A refurbished battery holds less. Lenovo says so itself: "The maximum capacity of the battery will decrease with time and use." Ask the shop for the battery health figure before you buy.
  5. A warranty. In the EU, a laptop from a shop has the legal guarantee: "Second-hand goods that you buy from a professional seller are also covered by the minimum 2-year guarantee." A private seller does not: "Goods bought from private individuals are not covered by these rules."

The EliteBook 845, T14 and T14s prices cover every generation of that model that this site tracks. Open the model page to see which generation each offer is. For the Latitude 5490, check the processor name: some offers carry a 7th generation Intel chip, which Windows 11 does not support. The Latitude 5490 also weighs 1.60 kg or more, so it misses York's 1.5 kg.

Which one to choose

  • The lowest price that meets every point: the top row of the table today. Check its processor name against point 2.
  • The lightest ThinkPad: the T14s, at 1.27 kg in Lenovo's lightest version.
  • An 11th generation Intel chip: the Latitude 5420.
  • Another light choice: the ThinkPad T490 or T14. Both are under 1.5 kg in Lenovo's lightest version.

Before you buy, compare the shop's Grade. Our guide to refurbished laptop grades explains what each shop's Grade means. To compare two models side by side, use the comparison pages.

Student discounts on new laptops

Some makers give students a discount on a new laptop. Microsoft says: "Use the Microsoft student discount to get 10% off select physical products, including select Surface devices, as well as select PCs and PC accessories." Dell's UK student page says: "Students & teachers get an extra 10% off everything". Both apply only in the maker's own store, and both have limits. Dell writes: "Exclusions apply".

A discount of 10% makes a new laptop a little cheaper. Compare the discounted price with the rows above, at the same RAM. If a new laptop with 16 GB still costs much more than a refurbished one, the refurbished laptop is the better value.

Questions people ask

How much RAM does a student laptop need?

16 GB. The University of Plymouth recommends 16 GB. The University of York accepts 8 GB as a minimum, and says that most courses see no benefit above 16 GB. Plymouth warns that courses with "CAD, gaming, film or design" can need more, so ask your department first.

Does a student laptop need Windows 11?

York and Plymouth both list Windows 11. Buy a laptop with an Intel 8th generation processor or newer, or an AMD Ryzen that Microsoft names on its list, so that Windows 11 runs on it with Microsoft's support.

Which refurbished laptop is best for a student?

A light business laptop with 16 GB of RAM, a processor that runs Windows 11, and a weight under 1.5 kg. The ThinkPad T14s, T490 and T14 fit, and the Dell Latitude 5420 and HP EliteBook 845 also have 16 GB offers. The table above shows today's price for each.

Do students get a discount on a new laptop?

Yes, in some makers' own stores. Microsoft and Dell both give students 10% off selected products. Compare that price with a refurbished laptop at the same RAM before you decide.
