Best refurbished laptops for programming: 16 or 32 GB
Buy a business laptop with 16 GB of RAM, two RAM slots and a four-core processor. 16 GB meets what Docker, Android Studio and Visual Studio ask for, and a second slot lets you go to 32 GB later. Today the cheapest refurbished laptop on this site sells from €132 (16 GB), seen 16 September 2026.
What a programmer needs, in order
The tools you run decide the laptop. Their makers publish what they need, so start there.
1. RAM: 16 GB minimum, 32 GB for containers and virtual machines
An editor, a browser, a local database and a container engine all hold memory at the same time. The tool makers' own figures show how much.
- Docker Desktop on Windows needs "8GB system RAM". That is the floor for Docker alone, before your editor and browser.
- Android Studio lists "Studio & Emulator: 16GB" as its minimum, and 32 GB as its recommended RAM. Each extra emulator costs more: "Running multiple AVDs simultaneously requires approximately 4GB of memory per AVD."
- Visual Studio states: "we recommend 16 GB RAM for typical professional solutions".
So 16 GB is the minimum for most programming work today. Buy 32 GB if you run several containers, more than one emulator, or a virtual machine. See every refurbished laptop with 32 GB with today's price.
2. Processor: four cores or more
The tool makers ask for four cores. Visual Studio says "Quad-core or better recommended". JetBrains asks for a "CPU with x86_64 or arm64 architecture and 4 cores".
Read the processor name before you buy, because one model can ship with two or four cores. Dell's manual for the Latitude 5490 says: "Your system is built with Intel Dual and Quad Core processors." In its list, the 7th generation i5-7300U has two cores. The 8th generation i5-8350U has four.
Docker also needs the processor's virtualization feature. Its setup page says: "Enable hardware virtualization in BIOS/UEFI". Check that this setting is on when your laptop arrives.
3. A keyboard you can type on all day
You type for hours, so read a review of the keyboard before you buy. A review of the ThinkPad T480 says: "With its tactile, smile-shaped keys and strong feedback, the ThinkPad T480's keyboard offers a really good typing experience."
4. RAM you can upgrade
A laptop with two RAM slots lets you buy 16 GB now and add more later. A laptop with soldered RAM keeps the amount it was sold with. The section "Buy 16 GB now, upgrade to 32 GB later" explains how to check.
Four refurbished laptops for programming, cheapest first

Dell Latitude 5490
The 14-inch Latitude 5490 was the cheapest of the four in every Market we checked on the day we wrote this. Dell's manual states: "Your computer supports a maximum of 32 GB of memory." Buy it with an 8th generation processor, for the four cores. Buy it with 8 GB only if you plan to add a module on the day it arrives.
Dell Latitude 5420
The 14-inch Latitude 5420 is the newest design in this list, with a 10th or 11th generation Intel processor. Dell lists "Two SO-DIMM slots", and its largest configuration is "64 GB, 2 x 32 GB, DDR4, 3200 MHz". On the day we wrote this, its cheapest offer had 16 GB in every Market we checked. It is the best fit for the plan in the next section: buy 16 GB now, add more later.
Lenovo ThinkPad T480
The T480 is the laptop whose keyboard the review above praises. Lenovo's specification sheet states "32GB max / 2400MHz DDR4, dual-channel capable, two DDR4 SO-DIMM sockets". It is an older design, so read our guide Is the ThinkPad T480 still good in 2026? before you buy one.
Dell Precision 5540
The 15.6-inch Precision 5540 is the one to buy if you want 32 GB on the day it arrives. Dell lists "2x DDR4 SoDIMM", with "up to 32 GB" in each slot, so it takes 64 GB. It is the dearest row. On the day we wrote this, its cheapest offer in most Markets already had 32 GB.
Buy 16 GB now, upgrade to 32 GB later
A second RAM slot lets you get to 32 GB without a new laptop. Buy a laptop with 16 GB today, and add a second 16 GB module when your projects need it.
Ask the shop how its 16 GB is built before you buy. Dell's manual for the Latitude 5420 lists both "16 GB, 1 x 16 GB, DDR4, 3200 MHz" and "16 GB, 2 x 8 GB, DDR4, 3200 MHz". With one 16 GB module, the second slot is free, and you add one module to reach 32 GB. With two 8 GB modules, both slots are full, and you must replace both.
Check that the RAM is not soldered. The ThinkPad T490 came after the T480, but Lenovo lists "One memory soldered to systemboard, one DDR4 SO-DIMM slot, dual-channel capable". You can upgrade only one slot on it. Browse every refurbished laptop with upgradable RAM: our research shows its RAM is not soldered.

Questions people ask
How much RAM do I need for programming?
16 GB for most work. Visual Studio recommends 16 GB for professional work, and Android Studio needs 16 GB to run with its emulator. Buy 32 GB for several containers, several emulators or a virtual machine.
Is 16 GB of RAM enough for Docker and Android Studio?
Yes, for one project at a time. Docker Desktop on Windows needs 8 GB, and Android Studio with one emulator needs 16 GB. Each extra emulator needs about 4 GB more, so a second one pushes you towards 32 GB.
Can I buy a laptop with 16 GB and upgrade to 32 GB later?
Yes, when it has two RAM slots and no soldered RAM. All four laptops in this guide have two slots. Ask the shop if the 16 GB is one module or two, because two modules fill both slots.
Which refurbished laptop is best for programming?
A business laptop with 16 GB, two RAM slots and a four-core processor. Of the four here, the Dell Latitude 5490 was the cheapest when we wrote this. The Latitude 5420 is the newest. The ThinkPad T480 has a keyboard that a review praises. The Latitude 5420 and Precision 5540 both take 64 GB.
