Are refurbished laptops worth it? Today's numbers

Yes, for most buyers. A refurbished laptop is tested, cleaned and sold with a warranty, and it costs a fraction of a new one. Today the cheapest refurbished laptop with 16 GB of RAM on this site sells from US$142 (16 GB), seen 16 September 2026. The risk is real but small, and four checks remove most of it.

What "refurbished" means

A refurbished laptop is a used laptop that a business has checked and restored before resale. Back Market, a large refurbished marketplace, puts it this way: "Refurbishment is the process of meticulously restoring a device to its original condition, from appearance to functionality."

Manufacturers run the same trade. Apple sells its own returns and says: "Apple Certified Refurbished products include a one‑year warranty, full functional testing, and savings up to 15%." That is Apple's discount on its own recent machines. The large saving is elsewhere: in business laptops that a company leased for three or four years and then sold on.

The numbers today

This site reads the prices of refurbished shops every day. In your Market it sees refurbished laptops across 9 shops, seen 11 October 2026. Measured by memory, the typical offer costs a median US$30.56 per GB of RAM, seen 11 October 2026.

These numbers change every day, and this page reads them fresh on every visit. The 16 GB table lists every offer from the cheapest up. Two examples of what a typical offer is: the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 and the Dell Latitude 5420. Both were sold new to companies, and both now come back to the market as refurbished stock.

A new laptop costs more now than it did two years ago, because memory costs more. Our why refurbished page shows the memory price series from Stanford's record of DRAM prices. A refurbished laptop carries the memory price of the year it was made.

Your rights when you buy

In the EU, a refurbished laptop from a shop has a legal guarantee, the same as a new one. The EU's own consumer page says: "Second-hand goods that you buy from a professional seller are also covered by the minimum 2-year guarantee." Some countries let the shop agree a shorter period with you. The same page sets the floor: "However, it must be no shorter than 1 year."

This protection applies only when you buy from a business. A private seller on a classified site gives you no such guarantee. That is the main difference between refurbished and simply used.

The four checks

A refurbished laptop is worth it when it passes these four checks.

  1. The battery. A battery wears with use. A good shop states a floor. Back Market sets its own: "Minimum 80% battery health with 100% charge capacity." If a shop states no battery figure, ask for one.
  2. The processor and Windows 11. Microsoft states: "On October 14, 2025, Windows 10 support ended." Extended security updates for Windows 10 run to October 12, 2027, and Windows 11 is the choice that lasts longer. Windows 11 needs a processor on Microsoft's list. For Intel laptop processors, the oldest Core generation on that list is the 8th: it names "8th Generation Core i5 Processors". Buy a laptop with an 8th generation Intel processor or newer.
  3. The RAM. Buy 16 GB. It is the size this site ranks first, because 8 GB is tight for a modern browser and a video call at the same time. Some laptops have RAM soldered to the board, so check whether you can add more later.
  4. The Grade. A Grade describes the case, not the function, and each shop uses its own words. Our guide to refurbished laptop grades explains every scale we track.

When refurbished is not worth it

Refurbished is the wrong choice for some buyers. If you need the newest graphics chip for games, a refurbished business laptop does not have one. If you need a laptop that lasts eight more years, buy the newest generation you can afford, refurbished or new. And if the refurbished price is close to the new price, buy new: the saving must pay for the older parts.

The environment

Every laptop that stays in use is a laptop that does not become waste. Most electronic waste is not recycled in any system that counts it. The UN's Global E-waste Monitor found that "less than one quarter (22.3%) of the year’s e-waste mass was documented as having been properly collected and recycled in 2022". A second life for a laptop also avoids the emissions of making a new one, and our why refurbished page shows that number.

Questions people ask

Are refurbished laptops reliable?

A refurbished laptop from a shop is tested before sale and carries a warranty. The shop must repair or replace a faulty laptop within the guarantee period. Business laptops were also built for daily use at work, with a keyboard and a case made to take it.

What warranty does a refurbished laptop have?

In the EU, a refurbished laptop bought from a business has the legal guarantee: two years, or at least one year where the shop agrees a shorter period with you. Many shops add their own warranty on top. Apple gives one year on its own refurbished machines.

Is a refurbished laptop better than a new one?

It is better value, not a better machine. A refurbished business laptop costs much less than a new laptop with the same RAM, and it was built for years of daily work. A new laptop has a newer processor, a fresh battery and a longer future.

What should I check before I buy a refurbished laptop?

Check four things: the battery health, a processor that runs Windows 11 (Intel 8th generation or newer), 16 GB of RAM, and the shop's Grade. Then buy from a business, not a private seller, so the legal guarantee applies. Compare offers side by side on our comparison pages.
