Refurbished vs used vs new laptop: today's price
Refurbished, for most buyers. A business tests a refurbished laptop and sells it with a guarantee. Today the cheapest refurbished laptop on this site sells from US$142 (16 GB), seen 16 September 2026. A used laptop from a private seller comes with no legal guarantee. A new laptop has a fresh battery and the full guarantee, at a new laptop's price.
The three options side by side
The difference is not the laptop. It is who sells it to you, and what that seller owes you.
| Refurbished | Used | New | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who sells it | A business | A private seller | A shop |
| Price today | from US$142 (16 GB), seen 16 September 2026 | No catalogue number: each seller sets a price | No catalogue number: this site tracks refurbished offers only |
| Tested before sale | Usually, by the business | Only if you test it | New from the factory |
| Legal guarantee in the EU | 2 years, or at least 1 if agreed | None | 2 years |
| Condition | A Grade from the shop | What the seller tells you | New |
This site reads refurbished offers only, so only the refurbished column has a live price. We do not type a price for the other two columns, because a price we cannot read today would be wrong tomorrow.
Refurbished: a business, a test and a guarantee
A refurbished laptop is a used laptop that a business checked, cleaned and put back on sale. Lenovo describes the work on its refurbished laptops: "Clean exterior and run full diagnostics on screen, keyboard, touchpad, ports, battery, storage, and OS." Lenovo also gives a warranty: "Every Lenovo Certified Refurbished device comes with a new standard 1-year Lenovo warranty with options to upgrade."
The law protects you too, because the seller is a business. The EU's consumer page says: "Second-hand goods that you buy from a professional seller are also covered by the minimum 2-year guarantee." In some EU countries, the shop can agree a shorter period with you. The same page sets the floor: "However, it must be no shorter than 1 year." France names refurbished goods in its own rule: "Le défaut doit vous apparaître dans un délai de 2 ans à compter de la délivrance du bien, qu'il soit neuf, d'occasion, reconditionné, ou qu'il s'agisse d'un service numérique". In short, a fault must show within 2 years, for new, used and refurbished goods alike.
Refurbished laptops here sell across 9 shops, seen 11 October 2026. Measured by memory, they cost a median US$30.56 per GB of RAM, seen 11 October 2026. The 16 GB table lists every offer from the cheapest up. A typical example is the Lenovo ThinkPad T14 Gen 1, a business laptop that many shops sell refurbished.
Each shop also gives the case a Grade. The Good Grade filter shows laptops with clear signs of use that do not affect use, and our guide to refurbished laptop grades explains every scale.
Used: a private seller and no guarantee
A used laptop from a private seller can be a good laptop. The difference is the risk, and you take all of it. The EU guarantee applies only when a business sells: "Goods bought from private individuals are not covered by these rules."
Citizens Advice, the UK consumer body, says: "If you buy from a private seller the principle of “buyer beware” applies. This means while the seller can’t misdescribe the item, they can omit information." In the UK, a private sale also has no cooling-off period. Citizens Advice lists this case among the purchases with none: "anything from a private individual - for example someone from a social media marketplace or online auction site".
If you buy used, test the laptop before you pay. Check the battery health, the keyboard, every port and the screen. Make sure the laptop is not locked to someone else's account. Then compare the price with the refurbished offers on this site.
New: a shop, a fresh battery and the full guarantee
A new laptop from a shop has no wear at all. You get a new battery, the newest processor. In the EU, the guarantee is the same minimum: "You always have the right to a minimum 2-year guarantee from the moment you received the goods." In the UK, a shop owes you this in the first 30 days, for new and refurbished goods alike: "0-30 days: You can claim a full refund for goods that are of unsatisfactory quality, unfit for purpose or not as described."
The drawback is the price. A new laptop carries this year's memory price, and memory costs more now. Our why refurbished page shows the memory price series.
Which one to choose
- Choose refurbished when you want a tested laptop with a guarantee for less than a new one. For most buyers this is the best balance. Our guide are refurbished laptops worth it gives the four checks before you buy.
- Choose used when you can test the laptop in person and you accept that no guarantee applies.
- Choose new when you need the newest processor or graphics chip, or a laptop that must last many years.

Questions people ask
Is a refurbished laptop better than a used one?
It is the same kind of laptop with less risk. A business tested it, gives it a Grade and owes you the legal guarantee. A private seller owes you none of that.
Does a used laptop from a private seller have a warranty?
No legal guarantee applies in the EU, and in the UK the rule is "buyer beware".
When is a new laptop the better choice?
Buy new when you need the newest processor or graphics chip, or when a refurbished price is close to the new price. The saving must pay for the older parts.
