HP EliteBook 840: which G to buy refurbished

Buy a G7 or a G8. Both run Windows 11, and both have two RAM slots, so you can add RAM later. Every G6 runs Windows 11 too. Skip the G3, the G4 and any G5 with a 7th generation processor. Refurbished EliteBook 840 laptops of every G are sold across 3 shops, seen 10 October 2026.

The generations side by side

The EliteBook 840 is HP's 14-inch business laptop. HP gives each new model a new G number. Most refurbished offers are a G5, G6, G7 or G8. The G9 is newer and rarer. Each link below opens the Model page for that G, with its own offers and prices in your Market.

The year is the first date in the change log of HP's QuickSpecs for that G. The site also tracks the older G3 and G4, and the newer G10 and G11. See the notes at the end of this guide.

Live numbers: every EliteBook 840 together

This site files every EliteBook 840 under one model name, 840, and keeps the G apart. So the numbers below cover every EliteBook 840 together, from the G1 to the G11, and the 840 Aero too. They are not the numbers for one G. For that, open the G's Model page in the table above.

• The cheapest refurbished EliteBook 840 of any G costs from €162 (8 GB), seen 30 August 2026. The cheapest offer can be an old G1 to G4, so read the G in the offer before you buy.
• The EliteBook table lists every EliteBook offer from the cheapest up, the 840 and every other EliteBook model.

RAM: add it later

Every 840 from the G5 to the G9 has two RAM slots and no RAM soldered to the board. The G5 QuickSpecs state "Memory Slots 2 SODIMM Both slots are upgradeable". The G7 QuickSpecs state "Both slots are customer accessible / upgradeable DDR4 SODIMMS, system runs at 2666". The G9 QuickSpecs list "Memory Slots 2 SODIMM DDR5 SODIMMS, system runs at 4800 MT/s".

So an 8 GB offer is not a trap here. You can buy it and add a second stick. Check what the offer has in each slot: a single 8 GB stick leaves one slot free. For 16 GB from day one, the 16 GB table lists every offer with 16 GB or more.

Few shops sell a G9 refurbished yet. See G8 vs G9.

The G3 and G4: too old for Windows 11

Notebookcheck's G3 review says: "Entry-level configurations are equipped with a conventional hard drive, Core i5-6200U as well as 4 GB of RAM." The Core i5-6200U is Intel's 6th generation. Notebookcheck's G4 review says of the G4: "You only get a new processor from Intel's current Kaby Lake generation." Kaby Lake is Intel's 7th generation. Microsoft's list has no generation older than the 8th, so neither G runs Windows 11 on a supported processor. See G4 vs G5 for the step up.

The G10 and later

The G10 and G11 are newer than this guide covers in detail. Few shops sell them refurbished. Open the G10 and G11 Model pages for current offers, or see G9 vs G10.

Which G for your budget

• Best value: G7 or G8 with 16 GB. Both run Windows 11 and take up to 64 GB. The G8 adds Thunderbolt 4 and HDMI 2.0b. Buy a G7 if it costs clearly less than a G8 in your Market. Compare the two Model pages before you buy.
• Minimum for Windows 11: G6. Every G6 has an 8th generation processor. It also keeps the RJ-45 Ethernet port. A G5 also qualifies, but only with an 8th generation processor.
• Newest: G9. Buy one for DDR5 and the 16:10 screen. Few shops sell it, so check its Model page first.
• Avoid: the G3, the G4 and a G5 with a 7th generation processor. None of them is on Microsoft's Windows 11 list.

Before you buy any G, read what the Grade of the offer means, and check the battery when the laptop arrives. To see how the EliteBook compares with a ThinkPad or a Latitude, read ThinkPad vs Latitude vs EliteBook.
